I'm going to Carroll College in Helena, Montana, for a year as a exchange student. Helena is the capital of the State of Montana and located west of Montana. Now, Carroll has 1,400 student and 21 international students who are from 13 different countries. Top three countries are South Korea, Canada and Japan. I met a adviser of Carroll College last month, and talked with her about school. She was very kind and nice. I heard that I'm going to be an only one student from Japan when I go to Carroll. It's wonderful and so cool!! Because that's what I want. Yeah! I'll do my best.

Cows Everywhere!

India has 30 per cent of the world's cattle. There are 26 distinctive breeds of cow in India. The hump, long ears and bushy tail distinguish the Indian cow.
Here cows are everywhere! Because the cow is respected as a sacred animal, it's allowed to roam unharmed, and they are pretty used to the traffic and the rhythm of the city.

National Anthem

The song "Jana-gana-mana", composed by Rabindranath Tagore, was adopted by the Constituent Assembly as the national anthem of India on 24 January 1950. It was first sung on 27 December 1911 at the Calcutta Session of the Indian National Congress. The complete song consists of five stanzas. The First stanza consists of the full version of the National Anthem.

It reads:
Jana-gana-mana-adhinayaka, jaya he
Bharata-bhagya-vidhata.
Punjaba-Sindhu-Gujarata-Maratha
Dravida-Utkala-Banga
Vindhya-Himachala-Yamuna-Ganga
Uchchala-Jaladhi-taranga.
Tava shubha name jage,
Tava shubha asisa mage,
Gahe tava jaya gatha,
Jana-gana-mangala-dayaka jaya he
Bharata-bhagya-vidhata.
Jaya he, jaya he, jaya he,
Jaya, jaya, jaya, jaya he!

Playing time of the full version of the national anthem is approximately 52 seconds. A short version consisting of first and last lines of the stanza (playing time approximately 20 seconds) is also played on certain occasions. The following is Tagore's English rendering of this stanza:

Thou art the ruler of the minds of all
people,
Dispenser of India's destiny.
Thy name rouses the hearts of
Punjab, Sind,
Gujarat and Maratha,
Of the Dravida and Orissa and
Bengal;
It echoes in the hills of the Vindyas
and Himalayas,
Mingles in the music of Jamuna and
Ganges and is
Chanted by the waves of the Indian
Sea.
They pray for thy blessings and sing
thy praise.
The saving of all people waits in thy hand,
Thou dispenser of India's destiny.
Victory, victory, victory to thee.

Religion 3

Islam
"Arab traders brought Islam to South India in the seventh century. After them came the Afghans and the Mughuls, of whom the most enlightened was the Emperor Akbar. Akbar almost succeeded in founding a new religion Din-e-Elahi, based on both Hinduism and Islam, but it found few adherents.Islam has flourished in India through the centuries. Muslim citizens have occupied some of the highest positions in the country since independence in 1947."

Religion 2

Jainism and Buddhism
"In the sixth century before Christ, Mahavira propagated Jainism. Its message was asceticism, austerity and non-violence. At about the same time, Buddhism came into being. Gautama Buddha, a prince, renounced the world and gained enlightenment. He preached that 'Nirvana' was to be attained through the conquest of self. Buddha's teachings in time spread to China and some other countries of South East Asia."

Religion 1

Hinduism
The Hindu religion had its origin in the concepts of the early Aryans who came to India more than 4,000 years ago.

Languages

India has 17 major languages and 844 different dialects. The Sanskrit of the Aryan settlers has merged with the earlier Dravidian vernaculars to give rise to new languages.
Hindi, spoken by about 45 per cent of the population, is the national language. English has also been retained as a language for official communication.

Festival of India

There are a lot of festivals of India. For example, Christmas, New year, Easter, Onam, Deepawali, Muharram andHoli and so on. I have heard Christmas, New year and Easter. But I've never heard the others.

Festivals: Buddha Purnima

Buddha Purnima or Buddha Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the Buddha, is widely celebrated, on a full moon night in April/May. The Buddha was born on the full-moon day in the month of Vaisakh in 563 BC. He achieved enlightenment as well as nirvana on the same date. It is also believed that Yashodara, the Buddha's wife, his charioteer Channa and even his horse Kantaka were born on the same day. On this day, Buddhists offer prayers in their temples. Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh and Bodh Gaya in Bihar are the main centres of celebration.

National Fruit - Mango

A fleshy fruit, eaten ripe or used green for pickles, of the tree Mangifera indica, the mango is one of the most important and widely cultivated fruits of the tropical world. Its juicy fruit is a rich source of Vitamins A, C and D. In India there are over 100 varieties of mangoes, in different sizes, shapes and colours. Mangoes, have been cultivated in India from time immemorial. The poet Kalidasa sang its praises. Alexander savoured its taste, as did the Chinese pilgrim Hieun Tsang. Akbar planted 100,000 mango trees in Darbhanga, known as Lakhi Bagh.

National Tree - Banyan

The Banyan tree is the Indian fig tree, Ficus bengalensis, whose branches root themselves like new trees over a large area. The roots then give rise to more trunks an branches. Because of this characteristic and its longevity, this tree is considered immortal and is an integral part of the myths and legends of India. Even today, the banyan tree is the focal point of village life and the village council meets under the shade of this tree.

National Flower - Lotus

The lotus or waterlily is an aquatic plant of Nymphaea family with broad floating leaves and bright fragrant flowers that grow only in shallow waters. The leaves and flowers float and have long stems that contain air spaces. The big attractive flowers have many petals overlapping in a symmetrical pattern. The root functions are carried out by rhizomes that fan out horizontally through the mud below the water. Lotuses, prized for their serene beauty, are delightful to behold as their blossoms open on the surface of a pond. In India the sacred lotus is legendary and much folklore and religious mythology is woven around it.

National Bird - Peacock

The male bird of species Pavo cristatus, the peacock is a native of India, with striking plumage and upper tail converts marked with iridescent ocelli, and able to expand its tail erect like fan as ostentatious display. Peacocks are related to pheasants. Found wild in India (and also domesticated in villages) they live in jungle lands near water. They were once bred for food but now hunting of peacocks is banned in India. The peahen has no plumage. These birds do not sound as beautiful as they look - they have a harsh call.

National Animal - Tiger

The large Asiatic carnivorous feline quadruped, Panthera tigris, maneless, of tawny yellow colour with blackish transverse stripes and white belly, proverbial for its power and its magnificence, is the national animal of India. There are very few tigers left in the world today. A decade ago the tiger population in India had dwindled to a few hundreds. The Government of India, under its Project Tiger programme, started a massive effort to preserve the tiger population. Today, thanks to Project Tiger, India's population of tigers is in a comfortable position

Indian streets

Indian streets are always crowded with bicycles, bicycle-based carriages called "rickshaws", three-wheeled bike taxis and small number of automobiles. They flow disorderly like fluid on the street.

インドの通りは、無数の自転車を中心にいつも混んでいて、市内では信号機の無いロータリー方式が多いので、混沌という印象です。

The pople who was accused in India

I knew the news that RICHARD GERE was accused by Indian governments and citizens on the TV. Because he kissed indian actress for some reason. This seems to be what is not forgiven in India.

"An Indian court has issued arrest warrants for Hollywood actor Richard Gere and Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty today, saying their kiss at a public function "transgressed all limits of vulgarity," media reports said."

Indian literature

"Indian literature is generally acknowledged, but not wholly established, as the oldest in the world. India has 22 officially recognized languages, and a huge variety of literature has been produced in these languages over the years. In Indian literature, oral and written forms are both important. Hindu literary traditions dominate a large part of Indian culture. Apart from the Vedas which are a sacred form of knowledge, there are other works such as the Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, treatises such as Vaastu Shastra in architecture and town planning, and Arthashastra in political science. Devotional Hindu drama, poetry and songs span the subcontinent. Muslim literary traditions also dominate a large part of Indian culture. In the medieval period, during which time India was mostly under Muslim rule, Indian Muslim literature flourished."

Environmental Issues

There are a lot of issues in India. For example, Air Pollution, Energy Consumption, Carbon Emissions Energy and Environmental Outlook.

Official language

"One of the main political issues in Indian politics is connected to language problem. After India’s independence the government decided that the official language of India will be Hindi. Hindi belongs to the family of Aryan languages. Speakers of other languages, especially the Dravidian languages, saw in this decision an attempt to erase their language cultures (see also Aryans and Dravidians). But the Indian constitution has declared that English can also be used for official purposes. Hindi has at least 13 different dialects and she is the most commonly spoken language in India. But the reason Hindi was chosen to be the official language of India wasn’t because it is the most commonly spoken language in India, but it has connection with India history before it’s independence."

English in India

"Officially English has a status of assistant language, but in fact it is the most important language of India. After Hindi it is the most commonly spoken language in India and probably the most read and written language in India. Indians who know English will always try to show that they know English. English symbolizes in Indians minds, better education, better culture and higher intellect. Indians who know English often mingle it with Indian languages in their conversations. It is also usual among Indians to abruptly move to speak fluent English in the middle of their conversations. English also serves as the communicator among Indians who speak different language. English is very important in some systems – legal, financial, educational, business – in India. Until the beginning of 1990s, foreign movies in India weren’t translated or dubbed in Indian languages, but were broadcast in English and were meant for English speakers only. The reason Indians give such importance to English is related to the fact that India was a British colony (see Europeans in India)."

information on INDIA

"India is a grand country. It is the seventh largest country in the world and the second most populated country in the world. Many see India as a sub-continent rather than a country. There exist in different parts of India, different cultures, languages, manners as well as different historical backgrounds and influences of the same historical events. The official name for the country is Republic of India. The Indians call their country INDIA. There are also two other names for India less known outside India; BHARAT and HINDUSTAN. "

India friend

I met a India student, Bhutan student and Pakistan student who are in the Kumamoto University in the Japanese education class today. He came to Kumamoto in the beginning of April. He can speak five languages, except Japanese....! When I talked to him I found that American English and India English are totally different! I couldn't understand what he said. But I was interested in how India people speak English!

Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum

"The Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum is located in New Delhi at 1 Safdarjung Road in the home where she lived. The house stands in a lovely garden with mature trees and flowering plants. It contains a collection of photographs documenting her life from her childhood to her days as prime minister. In addition, a number of rooms have been dedicated to her son Rajiv Gandhi who was assassinated in May 1991. Her library and living room have been maintained just as she kept them. These rooms are not open to the public. However, they can be viewed through the windows from the gardens."
